Calming signals: learn to read your dog's language

Jorge Mateo2 September 20266 min read

Yawns, licks, head turns... Your dog talks to you all the time. Learning their signals is the first step to truly understanding them.

Yawning, lip licking, turning the head... your dog is talking to you all the time.

Common calming signals

  • Yawning out of context.
  • Quick lip licking.
  • Turning the head or looking away.
  • Suddenly sniffing the ground.
  • Moving slowly or approaching in a curve.
  • Shaking off after a tense moment.

Why it matters

If we ignore these signals, the dog may need to growl or snap. A growl is communication, not bad behaviour; punishing it removes the warning, not the discomfort.

How to respond

Give space, don't force interactions, teach children to respect their timing and observe the context. In my home sessions in Madrid we learn to read your dog together.
