Fixed leash or retractable: why I recommend a fixed leash

A retractable leash seems to give freedom, but its spring keeps constant tension, so your dog learns that pulling is how to move forward.

Why retractables don't help

• They teach pulling.
• Confusing communication: sometimes 5 m, sometimes 1 m.
• Real risks: burns, cuts, failing locks, a dropped handle scaring the dog.
• Little control on busy city pavements.

Benefits of a fixed leash

A 2–3 m fixed leash (or a 5–10 m long line in parks) allows clear communication, a loose leash, calm sniffing and more safety. Pair it with a Y-shaped harness that doesn't restrict the shoulders.
