Separation anxiety in a Madrid flat: what you can do today

Close neighbours, thin walls, long hours. How to tackle separation anxiety in a dog living in a Madrid flat.

Why it is especially delicate in a flat

In a Madrid flat, separation anxiety is not only the dog's problem: it is also a problem with neighbours, long working hours and the family's guilt. This combination often pushes towards quick fixes (sedation, punishment, "let them bark until they get tired") that make things worse.

What separation anxiety is and is not

It is:

  • Real panic when left alone (not just boredom).
  • Intense vocalizations, destruction, drooling, stress-related urination/defecation.
  • Behaviours that appear even with short absences.

It is not:

  • A young bored dog that chews the sofa once.
  • A dog that barks at noises in the stairwell.
  • A dog that protests for the first 2 minutes and then sleeps.

Telling them apart completely changes the plan.

General plan (simplified)

  1. Assessment with recording. A camera during real absences to see what actually happens.
  2. Needs covered. Quality walks, sniffing, rest, bond. Without this, nothing works.
  3. Gradual absence work starting from very short times (sometimes seconds).
  4. Environment management: where they stay, with what, with which smells and sounds.
  5. Veterinary support if the case is severe: in some cases, temporary medication prescribed by a veterinary behaviourist speeds up and humanizes the process.

Common mistakes in Madrid

  • Leaving them "to get used to it" for 8 hours: the nervous system sensitizes, it does not habituate.
  • Punishing destruction when you return: it increases anticipatory anxiety.
  • Getting a second dog as a "solution": it rarely is.
  • Moving house hoping the dog will change.

When to call

If your dog has been like this for weeks or months, if the neighbours have already complained or if your quality of life is affected, it is time to work with a dog educator in Madrid specialized in separation anxiety. The sooner, the less time and money.

In short

Separation anxiety can be worked on, but not improvised. In a Madrid flat, the plan has to take into account neighbours, schedules and family reality, not only the dog.
