What gentle dog training is

Gentle dog training (also called respectful or positive dog education) is a way of teaching your dog that prioritizes their emotional well-being, their safety and the relationship with you. It is not about "being permissive", but about using current science on animal cognition and emotion to accompany, not to subdue.

How it differs from traditional training

The classic behaviourist approach —dominance, corrections, punishment collars— is outdated. Current evidence (Ziv, 2017; Vieira de Castro et al., 2020) shows that aversive methods increase stress, damage the bond and worsen behaviour problems in the medium term.

Gentle dog training works with:

• Positive reinforcement and the absence of physical or emotional punishment.
• Constant reading of body language.
• Environment management (antecedents) before correction.
• Emotional regulation and rest as priorities.

Where to start

1. Observe before acting. One week watching your dog is worth more than three months of correcting.
2. Guarantee real rest. A dog that doesn't sleep 16-18 hours a day doesn't learn.
3. Reduce stimuli. Fewer saturated walks, more quality walks.
4. Work from the threshold. If your dog reacts, you are too close to the stimulus.
5. Reinforce what you do want to see, without asking for anything complicated at first.
